Feeling Strong on the Inside – Strength

Awhile back I was so disconnected from my body. I had been through round after round of invitro fertilization had been pumped full of meds, had given my body over to science in order to get my babies. Then pregnancy, childbirth, child rearing. For about…many years…I was just ugh…out of my body.

And the body needs to be brought in. You need to put an arm around it and hug it in close. Because the body is part of the body-mind-spirit chain. The body is where we FEEL things SENSE things…it’s a big part of this human experience.

What has made me feel MOST in my body. MOST strong, confident, secure…strength training. There a koobzillion reasons to strength train. I compiled a list – click here.

Here’s short vid with more on how strength training has strengthened me from the inside.

Invite strength training into your life in a way that makes sense for you. See what happens.

Peace, Sarah

Taking up Space

Last weekend, there was a competition at my local Crossfit gym. They sent out pictures on our group page from the event. I started looking, really looking at the incredible women that surround me at the gym.

They are strong.

They are amazing.

And friends?  They are not delicate flowers.

They kick some serious ass.

I combined what I saw with my eyes with how I’ve been feeling in my body since I started Crossfit a year ago…

But it lies in direct conflict with something glaring…my SIZE.

I’m bigger. More muscular. My ass is HUGE and my thighs are definitely loving up on each other when I walk. My shoulders and chest are broad.

None of my jeans fit anymore except for my boyfriend jeans…and they’re not baggy any longer. My bras are reaching maximum stretch around my middle. None of my underwear fits anymore.

So…naturally I thought I’d gained fat and was hating on myself. (uck.)

I actually didn’t put the two pieces really together until this week. I am bigger. I am more muscular. I have gained weight.

Yes…I have gained weight. AND ISN’T IT FREAKING FANTASTIC???

I was talking about this with my friend Amy and she said something that I want to shout from the rooftops.  Ready?  She said, “Why do women spend so much time and energy trying to take up LESS SPACE?”

Ding ding ding ding!

Why are we trying to make ourselves smaller? Why are we trying to take up less space?

The past couple of days it dawns on me that I LIKE THE CHANGES THAT ARE TAKING PLACE IN MY BODY. It’s different, to be sure, but I like it. I FEEL STRONG AND POWERFUL. And I love how I feel in my skin.

All of a sudden, I stopped freaking out about how none of my jeans could fit anymore…and started accepting that I liked how I was feeling in my body MORE than worrying about the size of my fantastic ass and thighs.

I ordered new jeans.

Let’s take up space sisters. Let’s inhabit the bodies we’ve been given fully and take up whatever space they are instead of warring with them and hating them and begging them to be smaller.

Peace, S

BIG Inspiration – Carol & Rebecca / 60+ Crossfitters

There are so many people that light me up.  I look around my life and am so inspired by the people that populate my life; it makes me feel so much gratitude.  Towards the top of my list are Carol & Rebecca – the ladies that inspire me from my Crossfit class.

These women inspire me to my bones…why?  Because they’re fearless.  Because they are aging so beautifully – focusing on STRENGTH and DURABILITY.  Because they’re hella nice.  They have been so nice to me – teaching me and guiding me and offering me advice and tips.  And they happen to be (I’m guessing I’ve never really asked…) 60+ years old!!  I admire them so much.  Here they are:

Rebecca (L) and Carol (R) Great.women. #inspiration

Carol & Rebecca agreed to answer some questions about why they love Crossfit and what inspires them…enjoy!

What Inspires You?

Carol: Connecting to my inner self inspires me. I have never been a religious person, but I am seeking to connect with my higher self constantly. I think part of that is doing physical things. For me, being in my body and feeling the energy course through my body is the Universe giving me hugs.

Rebecca:  I am inspired by effort.  At a Crossfit competition, what I enjoyed most was watching athletes attempting heavier and heavier weight until they failed.  We don’t know our max effort until we reach just beyond what we can do.  I am inspired by stories of people who have overcome great odds by their perseverance and effort.

Letter to Athleta CEO

Glenn Murphy
Gap Inc Chairman & CEO
2 Folsom St.
San Francisco, CA 94105

Dear Mr. Murphy:

I just received my latest catalogue from your Athleta Division and I have some feedback for you to consider.

There is not ONE WOMAN of color in your catalogue.

There is not ONE MIDDLE AGED OR OLDER WOMAN in your catalogue.

And it got me thinking – who IS your target demographic? Because brother, my clients are buying your stuff. And I’m buying your stuff. You have great athletic wear. That is why we buy your stuff.

So…why must you insist on making it be about a 20-25 year old white female?

The world is changing – and I pray that someday…our corporations and their marketing departments will follow.

I have seen your amazing ads for Gap representing people of all color. Why doesn’t it cross over? Heck even Title 9 has got you beat in that they’re using real women with real names and real colors.

You had one African American model for a time. One. I was delighted. I thought maybe…just maybe…you were beginning to be the change. But no, you’re not. And I find it so disappointing.

The obesity rate is alarming in the United States. And young women, children, are looking to have anyone to admire and look up to. Heck, ALL WOMEN are looking for someone to connect with and admire and look up to. And they don’t have to be white women. On the contrary, most every woman CELEBRATES when all women are represented. We’re not stupid. Do you think I look at who you have on your pages and think, “Yes. That is how I’ll look this season?” Give me an ever-loving break. Personally, I’d rather see real women doing real feats of strength or participating in real events wearing your stuff.

Why can’t your images reflect the real and amazing athletes – REAL women that are out there? A strong, kick ass older woman wearing your clothes? Yes. Asian women? Yes. Latino women? Yes. African American women? Yes.

Be the change Mr. Murphy – the world is truly awaiting for images that speak to us. And yours…sadly don’t.
