Gratitude Towards Your Body

This week I fell down the stairs and injured my back/hip/tail. I’m in pain and it’s hard to move…

My go-to feeling when I’m sick, injured, laid up – is FRUSTRATED. I’m a physical being who needs to move in order to feel complete. I detest being forced to be still.

I had to teach a class this week – the topic? GRATITUDE for your body. Reframing our negative voices about our body into giving thanks.

Gratitude

Ice Pack, check. Gratitude, check.

As I was sitting there with an ice pack on my a$$…I thought, “Holy crap…thanks Universe.”

Because here was the opportunity to actually stand in my frustration, reframe my attitude towards my body, and then teach a class on it…

So that’s what I did. I centered myself, took a piece of paper, and wrote 5 things that I was grateful for in that moment about my body…

  1. I am strong, so I’m bruised but not broken.
  2. I have padding on my butt which cushioned my fall.
  3. I can still write, create, work.
  4. I can feel pain – which informs my movement and protects me from further injury.
  5. I am courageous in my ability to ask for help.

What are your 5 things?

Gratitude is a powerful tool to bring into your toolbox of Self Compassion. It helps turn your attitude from “UGH this body is too __(fill in the blank)__ or not enough..” to “My body is fantastic and I’m grateful for it. My a$$ is two sizes bigger overnight! WTF?

You ever have those days that your ass apparently has grown two sizes overnight?

I have those. I wake up and I am like, “What in the actual f(*&?”

But I remind myself that it’s an illusion…it’s all in my head.

There isn’t any WAY to gain two sizes in my sleep.

Back in West Michigan, I interviewed a recovering bulimic. She was an Olympic medal winner who was outspoken about her disordered eating. She told me that when she has those days, she thinks hard about what’s stressing her out. For her, stress = illusion of weight gain. Once she could figure out her stressor, she could be like, “Ahhhh…that’s why.”

So what do you do when you wake up and feel this way?

Change your perspective.

Here are some tools that may help when you wake up and feel uncomfortable in your skin.  Click here if you want to print them out  and stick them up by your full-length mirror.

  1. Be tender with yourself. Instead of immediately unleashing self-loathing, be spacious and kind. “Oh look it’s one of those days today.”
  2. Walk away from the mirror and breathe.
  3. Come back to the mirror with eyes closed. Tell yourself, “I am beautiful. I am perfect as I am. My body is a gift. I love myself.”
  4. Open your eyes.
  5. I’m not kidding…how you SEE YOUR BODY WILL BE DIFFERENT.
  6. Simply by changing the internal narrative, you can change your perception.
  7. Think on the power of #6 and how you can apply it to other areas of your life.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

So much peace and love, Sarah

Self-Compassion Exercise

When my kids were both finally in school, I knew I needed to do some work around self-love and self-compassion. So I designed a self-study course for myself. High on the list was a book by Kristen Neff called, “Self Compassion.” You can see her TED Talk too by clicking here.

One of the exercises in the book was to write a letter to myself from the position of a loving friend.

It was a game changer for me.

You try. Click on this link: http://self-compassion.org/category/exercises/

Mirror Work

Self-Care and Self-Love Idea:

Mirror Work. It’s super weird, but REALLY powerful work.

Grab a sticky note, write one of these phrases on it:

“I accept you unconditionally right now.”
“You’re a gift.”
“I love you.”

Stick it on your bathroom mirror.

Look yourself in the eye anytime you go to the bathroom, IN THE EYE, and say what’s on the sticky note. It might feel really strange at first and you might want to avoid this work – that’s really telling no?

Do it for 30 days.

No joke…this work here will change some stuff inside. Promise.

Trust.

You’re worth it. xo.
