Ugh. Diet fads.

Today I was taking a look at this article about How Americans are Gluttons for Diet Fads and just got so frustrated. It makes my heart hurt that the diet industry is alive and kicking so well here in the United States.

I’m going to be the most unpopular person in America today, but I’m going to tell you the truth.

Ready?

There’s no quick fix.

There is NO.QUICK.FIX. people.

There is no shake, diet, drug, detox, or wrap that is going to get you thin healthfully.

There just isn’t. (Sidebar: Most people don’t give a crap about the healthfully part, they just want to be THIN.AT.ALL.COSTS.AND.AS.QUICKLY.AS.POSSIBLE.)

And when you feed into the machine of the DIET industry – it generally results in a repeat performance and then some. They’ve got you. You lost it, you gained it back, you want to lose it again and quickly.

It’s crazy making.

And it’s not good for your SOUL (because then you’re not loving the gift of YOU and you’re basing that self-disgust, hate, derision on the size of your damn pants.)

And it’s not good for your BODY (because you’re not giving it what it really needs.)

And it’s not good for your MIND (because then you obsess about it and it becomes all that you think about.)

Good food. Healthy amounts. Eat a rainbow. Move your body in a way that pleases you. Deep breaths. Get fresh air. Laugh. Love your amazing self. You may not end up being your dream size, but…you just might be AT PEACE and HEALTHY. Come on people.

Peace, Sarah

It’s all going south.

I like it when three completely different things present themselves to you as gifts from the Universe and they all illustrate the same thing in different ways.

First thing – A conversation with my neighbor Joan. We were talking about our parents getting older and how difficult that is for us to see. For each of us the takeaway was to MOVE AS MUCH AS WE CAN, WHILE WE CAN.

Second thing – I’m at the gym in the changing room and the beautiful women of the Water Aerobics are drying off and naked. And most of them are senior citizens. They are laughing and seemingly at home and content in their bodies. They are beautiful. They are fit. I admire them. I want to be like them when I grow up.

Third thing – a woman came to my class. Lovely, strong, full of life. She is living with Multiple Sclerosis. And when I asked the class to run down a hill, she wept. She wept because she used to be able to run down hills, and now she can’t. Now, with a determined look on her face, she concentrates on her balance and she walks down that hill. This woman was a runner, a mountain climber, a MOVER. She grieves the loss of ability in her body, and yet pushes herself to do her very best in what she CAN do.

We spend a lot of energy….wait, no, we WASTE a lot of energy disliking our bodies and wishing that they were different. So much energy wasted despising, wishing, working, coveting, loathing….

And here’s the deal people. It’s all going south. For each and every one of us eventually….it’s all going south. Eventually the skin sags around the muscle and things loosen up. Unless you are going to get a body lift (is there even such a thing?) it’s coming for all of us…

So when are we going to love ourselves? Love this shell that we’ve been given that holds our beautiful selves? Take care of it, move it, stretch it…but moreover – be grateful that we CAN do what we do.

If we take a wider view of our beautiful selves…not so myopic on our bellies, butts, jiggly arms, sagging jowels and zoomed out a bit. Maybe we could see how lovely we are as a whole. How nice it is to be right where we are…right here, right now.

Love the body you’re in. It’s part of wellness. Let go of the blaming, shaming, self-disgust, frustration. Embrace love, admiration, celebration and delight.

Please. And please stop letting marketing and sales geniuses define what beautiful is. It’s crap. Healthy? Yes. Eating well because it contributes to your wellness? Yes. Moving because it makes you feel good inside and out? Yes. But dieting yourself into submission because people say that’s what size you ‘should’ be? No. Working out obsessively because you want to look like xyz? No.

It’s all going south people.

Until then. Love your beautiful selves. Be grateful. Delight in yourself. Focus on health and wellness. Spread love around to others….and to yourself.

Peace,
Sarah

Whole 30 – Part Deux

The older I get (I’m 44) the more I want to be healthy. I don’t care so much about the looking good in a bikini (I try and keep those little devilish thoughts at bay), but I’d really like to be WELL.

All the time.

Not just some of the time.

All of the time.

And I felt like that when I did the Whole 30. Whole Foods – fresh veggies, fruits and good meat and fish and GOOD fats for 30 days. No sugar, no dairy, no sugar or sugar substitutes, no legumes, no alcohol, no grains, no soy, no processed foods of any kind.

The first time – it was just me. Now my husband has joined me on the journey. In the last month we’ve learned A LOT about how much we like to feel good, cook and eat well together, and just how freaking good it feels.

I also learned that wine is not my friend. Wine (any alcohol really) semi-nightly is not my friend. It makes me bloated and ‘inflamed.’ Also – in the simplest terms (I’m not a scientist) the liver is one of your greatest metabolic engines. And when your liver is taxed, you are simply not burning fat at optimum. You can be eating super clean and exercising, but still be overweight if you’re taxing your liver by drinking alcohol. Among other things alcohol does…leaky gut, inflammation etc…

So I’m on Day #2 – Want to join me?

Everything you need to know is at Whole9life.com. And my favorite cookbook INTHEWORLD is Well Fed, but you can find many, many of her recipes on her blog theclothesmakethegirl.com.

24 HOUR 10 LB WEIGHT LOSS GUARANTEED…puh-leeze.

I was thinking about how when you say, “Eat healthy and move your body” people’s eyes glaze over and they start thinking of beaches in exotic places. Yeah – I don’t think it’s exciting enough. I need a BIG BOLD FLASHY EXCITING SEXY marketing campaign to tell people what they already know. Repackage the truth to make it seem new and appealing.

I think people want QUICK fixes and FAST results and that’s why they take pills, do cleanses, and starve themselves of calories. They want to undo quickly what generally takes some time to create.

I get it. If I could be a genie and wiggle my nose and be exactly where I want to be I’d be tempted…

BUT. What if there are things to be learned in the process?
